Observations from the Rockies

This is what one of my people is experiencing this election season in the resort-ish town of Crested Butte, Colorado:

In my little corner of the world, national newspapers are difficult to come by, there is one radio station, and there is no TV. The radio station plays more Bob Marley and Dead than NPR programming. What I do hear is usually outdated and parcelled, bits and pieces of one morning's news or word of mouth interpretations of that news.It is warm here now, and the hippies with their dreads are swimming in the lakes naked. The rasta-painted shuttle bus makes its way up to the mountain from the town to pick up the visiting Texans from their air conditioned condo units so they can spend money buying ice cream cones and cowboy hats on the 6 block main street, further allowing the hippies to live here and swim naked in the lakes. The texans walk by women who have shirts on with bush's face xed out, and, "the only bush i trust is my own" written on them. The texans don't understand the shirt, but know they don't like the women. The women ride their townie bikes home down main street and bitterly eye the Bush/Cheney bumper stickers on 7 ton Ford Excursions with Texas license plates. The hippies have community softball tournaments, triathalons, and fishfry's to raise money for one of the 20 nonprofits in a town of 1500. The texans donate money to the nonprofits too, a lot actually, but not to that left wing environmental organization or to the theater with all those gays. In the local primary only the locals can vote, and the texans wonder at the results in the newspaper stating the percentage of Democratic vs. Republican voters. The republicans laugh and yell "we'll see", as they return to the lonestar state. the democrats say yes, we will.and the democrats laugh when they hear that republican delegates were censored out of seeing particular broadway shows, and they worry when Bush states we are winning the war on terror, that there is progress, that our freedom is not in jeapordy. They worry when oil prices are at an all time high and oil experts state it is not true we are running out of oil, that not only is there plenty left, but that whenever those initial stores run out, our technologies will continue to match our demand. Not to worry, we will still be able to continue killing the world with our pollutants.The people will vote.
